Yahtzee Dice – What are the Odds?
I have a little Yahtzee Handheld Game, and I have a question about the odds on the dice. I know that the odds of any number coming up on one die are 1/6. What are the odds if I am rolling two dice, or more?
For example, suppose I have this roll in Yahtzee:
3 5 5 4 5
I would keep the three fives, and roll the other two. I know that for each die, the odds are 1/6 that I’ll get a 5. But, do the odds change at all because I am rolling two dice? Don’t I have a slightly better chance of getting a 5 this way?
I’d like to know how odds are figured out for situations like this.
Yes, the odds change.
The chance of getting at least one five when rolling two dice are determined as follows:
To not get a 5, you have to roll a number other then 5 on oth dice. The chance of this is 5/6 for each die, so the probability that both dice will not have a 5 is (5/6) * (5/6) = 25/36. So the probability of getting at least one 5 is 11/36 or just under 1/3.
You can also work this out directly. There are three cases:
5 on die 1, not a 5 on die 2: probability (1/6) * (5/6) = 5/36
Not a 5 on die 1, 5 on die 2: probability (5/6) * (1/6) = 5/36
5 on both dice: probability (1/6) * (1/6) = 1/36
So again the probability is 11/36.
